The “Reimagine Stop & Shop” program, a comprehensive store remodeling and repositioning effort meant to modernize Ahold Delhaize USA’s largest brand behind new assortments and shopper conveniences, is now arriving in New Jersey.

The chain’s store at 1189 Broad St. in Clifton, N.J., late last week became the first unit to reveal renovations changes to shoppers. Additional renovations are on their way to other Stop & Shop units in the Garden State later this year, including in Bloomfield, Union, Bayonne, Pompton Plains and Dumont. Several others will follow in 2022, the Quincy, Mass.-based brand said.

For Ahold Delhaize, much is riding on the success of the Stop & Shop program, which was kicked off behind a handful of stores in Connecticut in 2018 and has since reached about 100 of its 400-plus stores in New England and Metro New York. Officials of its Dutch parent in a conference call reviewing quarterly earnings last week noted Stop & Shop was the only one of its U.S. brands not to have gained market share in the quarter.

In a separate interview with WGB last week, Chief Financial Officer Natalie Knight said Stop & Shop, however, had maintained share, and that renovated units in the chain were outperforming their peers. “When I look at Stop & Shop, I’m excited by the opportunity, because as we make improvements there, it has the biggest absolute upside for our business,” she said.

Highlights of the remodeled Clifton store include:

  • Enhanced produce department offering more ways to eat healthy.

  • Remodeled bakery department complete with cakes, cupcakes and other treats.

  • Upgraded meat and seafood departments with service cases that offer fresh filets and choice cuts.

  • Expanded full-service floral department.

  • Updated pharmacy where Stop & Shop’s pharmacists can conveniently and safely administer COVID-19 and other vaccines.

  • New grab-and-go meal solutions including a new hot foods bar featuring freshly packed entrees and sides.

  • Expanded dairy and frozen food departments offering wider assortments.

  • Organic and natural products integrated within the grocery aisles, allowing customers to see all product options available.

  • New self-checkout zones.

  • Convenience cases filled with the essentials—milk, bread, butter, and eggs—located near checkouts so customers can quickly grab the most-needed items, without having to walk the entire store.

“We’re excited to share our newly remodeled store with our local shoppers,” Craig Szymanski, store manager of Stop & Shop Clifton, said in a release. “We’ve added more of what our customers want and upgrades they need to get their shopping done faster and get back to what matters most.”

The Clifton store opened for the first time in 2009.
