Harris Teeter has landed a big scoop for ice cream lovers in 150 of its 260 stores with the expansion of North Carolina State University’s signature Howling Cow ice cream.
The prized ice cream, which has been manufactured on campus in Raleigh, N.C., for the past 70 years and was once available for purchase only at the North Carolina State Fair and N.C. State’s campus, is now available at Harris Teeter stores across the Carolinas.
“We are proud to partner with N.C. State as the exclusive grocery retailer of Howling Cow pints,” Harris Teeter spokeswoman Danna Robinson said in a statement. “Howling Cow and Harris Teeter were both born and bred in North Carolina and both are committed to exceptional product quality, which makes this local partnership a wonderful hometown pairing.”
Harris Teeter licensed the Howling Cow trademark, along with certain ingredients and formulas, in January 2019. Harris Teeter now manufactures six Howling Cow ice cream flavors: Campfire Delight, Cookie Dough2, Chocolate Chip Mint, Cookies & Cream, Butter Almond and Cherry Brick Road.
Proceeds from the Howling Cow licensing agreement help fund student scholarships and dairy and agriculture initiatives.
The expanded alliance between Harris Teeter and N.C. State “will provide a more convenient way for customers to enjoy their favorite Howling Cow ice cream,” said Gary Cartwright, dairy enterprise system director for N.C. State.
The university’s 329-acre dairy farm and nationally recognized food science program are at the heart of the “ridiculously delicious ice cream,” which is still made on campus in the Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab, part of the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences. The milk and cream come directly from more than 300 N.C. State cows on its farm in Raleigh, N.C.
Based in Matthews, N.C., Harris Teeter is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co. and operates stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia.
