Italian specialty grocer Uncle Giuseppe’s said it has acquired Turco’s, a specialty market in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., which it intends to renovate and operate under the Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace banner. The addition will be the independent grocer’s eighth store and seventh in New York.
The banner transition will occur in coming weeks, the company said, with a complete renovation and expansion expected in 2020. That will include the addition of a glass-enclosed pasta-making room and fresh mozzarella room, where customers can watch the products being made fresh daily.
“Our business model is very similar to what customers have enjoyed for years at Turco’s,” said Carl DelPrete, co-founder and CEO of Uncle Giuseppe’s, Farmingdale, N.Y. He added that customers can look forward to the company’s well-known unique offerings that include sauces, artisanal pasta, fresh mozzarella cheese and olive oil, as well as free-range, antibiotic- and hormone-free, 100% vegetarian-fed turkeys.
“Turco’s has been known for its courteous employees, fine products and an array of specialty departments. Uncle Giuseppe ’s Marketplace has taken pride in the same and is looking forward to welcoming the current Turco’s employees into the Uncle Giuseppe’s family as well as adding additional full-time and part-time positions from the surrounding area,” said Adam Giovia, VP of Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace.
The DelPrete family has known Turco’s original owners, Preston and Evelyn Turco, for years, said Philip DelPrete, Uncle Giuseppe’s co-founder and president. “Preston and Evelyn have built a long-lasting foundation in Yorktown Heights and have cultivated a truly unique vision for the store that is memorable, classic and successful. It is a credit to them and their employees’ hard work. We are excited to continue their legacy.”
