Walmart’s chief technology officer, Jeremy King, is moving on to the role of Head of Engineering at Pinterest after eight years with the company in which he oversaw the launch of Walmart Labs.

King joined Walmart as the retailer established its Walmart Labs tech hub in Silicon Valley and helped the retailer reimagine its e-commerce platform. Walmart Labs made more than 10 acquisitions during his watch and established four new tech offices, per a memo obtained by CNBC.

“The operational decisions made during that time were key to the success of our technology team and led to more agile ways of working, transparent toolsets, product-focused roadmaps and a robust patent program,” the memo stated.

Over the past two years, King took on expanded responsibilities as the retailer moved digital capabilities powered by Walmart Labs in-store.

“He encouraged true omnichannel thinking and created a unified team of technologists, each focused on one customer,” officials said in the memo, also pointing out that King had helped facilitate partnerships with companies such as Microsoft, Google and Nvidia.

King’s last day with Walmart will be March 29. Fiona Tan, SVP of customer technology for Walmart Labs, will take an “elevated role” as liaison for technology and Walmart U.S. and U.S. eCommerce leadership while the company searches for someone to fill King’s shoes.

Ben Silbermann, Pinterest CEO, said that the company believes King's values around "putting the customer first" align with its its own values.

"As we build products to inspire people to create a life they love, Jeremy’s technical experience and leadership are a perfect combination to build a visual discovery engine for all," Silbermann affirmed.
