Southeastern Grocers, parent company and home of Winn-Dixie grocery stores, broke ground April 7 for its new Apopka City Center Winn-Dixie store at 611 E. Main St. in Apopka, Fla. The grocer said it plans to open its new Central Florida location in early 2023 and that it will create more than 100 jobs.

The grocery retailer said that the Apopka City Center store is one of 12 new Winn-Dixie stores throughout the Sunshine State. The grocer also said that Winn-Dixie will also open a St. Johns location in Florida as part of the Grand Cypress development later this year and a Jacksonville location in the new College Park shopping plaza in early 2023—totaling more than 370 Winn-Dixie stores.

The groundbreaking ceremony included a presentation with remarks by Southeastern Grocers Senior VP of Development Jordan Post, Florida Sen. Randolph Bracy, Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson and TCII Capital Group CFO John Strzalka. Winn-Dixie said it has served the Apopka community for more than 36 years at its current store, located at 1565 US 441 N., and believes “now is the perfect time to expand its offerings and services to the growing community.”

The new Apopka City Center store will be designed to provide customers with a unique shopping experience featuring the fresh produce and high-quality meats and seafood as well as new signature categories. The grocery retailer said the store will also feature a new liquor store for customers.

Founded in 1925, Winn-Dixie grocery stores, liquor stores and in-store pharmacies serve communities throughout five southeastern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. is a subsidiary of Southeastern Grocers, which is one of the largest supermarket chains based in the Southeast. Southeastern Grocers Inc. is also parent company and home of Fresco y Mas and Harveys Supermarket.
