Winn-Dixie has reopened the Marathon, Fla., store that was devastated during Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

While the store fought through numerous hurricanes and natural disasters during its 37 years of existence, Irma’s 130 mph winds structurally damaged the building beyond repair. Despite the damage, the Winn-Dixie team opened up the store to those in need at the time of the hurricane, and store managers called every associate to ensure their well-being and offer them a safe haven.

Anthony Hucker, president and CEO of Southeastern Grocers, parent company of Winn-Dixie, said after the “incredible damage” that was caused by the hurricane, the retailer took the opportunity to rebuild the store with new concepts and local products, and it expanded the refresh to all five Florida Keys stores.

“Our beloved customers and associates have been through a long journey of rebuilding together, and we are honored to celebrate and support this vibrant community today, tomorrow and always,” he said.

The refreshed Marathon store offers a brand-new Naturally Better section, featuring healthier choices such as organic and gluten-free products that are all clearly marked, as well as a pizza station within the store, sushi station and walk-in beer cave.

The new store was celebrated with a communitywide ribbon-cutting ceremony and live music on March 27. Additionally, each Florida Keys Winn-Dixie hosted a community celebration on March 30. The Marathon Winn-Dixie held a community Giant Jenga Tournament for the chance to receive a $2,500 donation to a local charity of choice and all Florida Keys Winn-Dixie customers are invited to support the Conch Republic Marine Army with in-store donations.
