The event, held in Yakima on August 22nd at the Apple Tree golf course, generated $26,750 for the Madison House Community Youth Center. Domex Superfresh Growers created the event as a way to draw the Washington tree fruit industry into close contact with Madison House which serves neighborhood families, many of whom are involved in the tree fruit industry in the Yakima Valley. “The Journey of Hope Golf Classic has been instrumental in connecting the tree fruit industry to the kids of Madison House,” says Ed Kershaw, CEO of Domex Superfresh Growers and chair of Madison House advisory committee. “These children are members of our greater family in the fruit business and as such are deserving of our concern and support.” The donation was presented to Tony Baker, director of the Madison House, during an event held to celebrate the tremendous success of the fund raiser. “This donation represents the single largest contribution to the Madison House in its 25 year history,” he said. “When Ed Kershaw approached us with this idea, we were excited about the prospect, but had no idea just how large an impact it would have. These funds will help us do tremendous good among the families served by the Madison House Youth Center.” Located in downtown Yakima, Madison House Community Youth Center has offered safety and after school activities to youth who are at-risk due to the effects of intergenerational poverty since 1989. Today, subject-specific tutoring to enhance literacy, daily homework help, college and scholarship counseling, mentoring, internships, life-skills classes, fine arts, basic financial education, robotics, work force development and field trips and incentives are offered to youth and young adults who attend Madison House. "Exposure between the Madison House and the Washington Tree Fruit Industry was enhanced during a fun, well attended and organized golf tournament hosted by Domex Superfresh Growers,” says Rick Phillips, CEO of Union Gospel Mission, parent organization of the Madison House. “What a day! We are grateful to those who came out not only for the fun but for the purpose; giving opportunity to youth who would not otherwise have these life changing experiences at Madison House Community Youth Center,” said Phillips. Funds raised via the golf tournament will be used to sustain existing programs for youth, ages five through 20, giving them the opportunity to embrace hope beyond their daily circumstances through what is offered at the Madison House Community Youth Center.
