LEBANON, Tenn. — Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, a fast-casual restaurant widely known for its over-the-top comfort foods — and never mind the calories — has actually jumped on the lo-cal bandwagon.

The restaurant chain, testing some menu items that contain fewer calories than their core menu fare does, is looking to boost sales by attracting additional diners who might otherwise drive on by, keeping their health-consciousness intact.

The chain is famous for its fried chicken, sugar-cured ham, cornbread, waffles, biscuits and sausage gravy, and other Southern favorites.

The new category, dubbed Wholesome Fixin’s, will feature breakfast meals with fewer than 500 calories and lunches and dinners with fewer than 600 calories.

Grilled and/or baked meat and roasted vegetables will be part of the Wholesome Fixin’s, and fresh fruit sides will be offered, financial analysts have learned.

Such items as grilled catfish brushed with orange marmalade, and listed as having just 300 calories, is one example of a new menu item being tested at some of the 621-unit chain’s locations.
