WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Harmons Grocery is celebrating its 80th birthday with a month-long series of events that feature samples of its store-made food — notably its own bratwurst and fresh mozzarella.

The 16-unit, family-owned chain here started off the month with two weekends of offering free pie and ice cream from noon to 6 p.m. at all of its stores. Harmons was slated to offer “Foodies’ Outdoor Grilling” event of the month on Aug. 17-18.

A “Harmons Foodie” is “someone who shares, educates and introduces customers to Harmons’ signature food products,” according to Harmons’ website. During this seven-hour event, staffers were to greet customers as they grill burgers, and customers were to buy a quarter-pound burger, potato salad and a bottle of Nestlé’s water for $4.

Another Foodies’ grilling event is set for the last day of the month and will showcase Harmons’ store-made bratwurst. A brat on a roll, macaroni salad and a bottle of Nestlé’s water will be $5.

Every weekend this month, customers have been treated to demonstrations of fresh mozzarella-making. A Harmons birthday blog post also features  recipes with signature items.

The events described here are just a few in the celebratory series that also included chile roastings, chefs’ demonstrations and cooking classes.
