MATHEWS TO RETIRE FROM CONSUMER AFFAIRS AT GIANT

ded the consumer affairs department at Giant Foods here for the past 28 years, will retire at the end of the month to spend more time with her two school-age children. The company said Mathews will continue to provide advice and counsel on consumer issues. She will be succeeded by Andrea Astrachan, 36, a member of Mathews' consumer affairs team, who will work out of the offices of Stop & Shop in Quincy, Mass., although the 40-person consumer affairs department will remain here. Both Giant Food and Stop & Shop are owned by Netherlands-based Ahold. Mathews, 55 -- who describes herself as "the consumer on the inside" -- joined Giant Food as an intern and in 1977 she was named director of consumer affairs. She succeeded Esther Peterson, Giant's first consumer advocate, and in 1984 she was named a vice president. During her tenure at Giant Mathews offered health care advice, developed nutritional programs and appeared in Giant's television and radio ads.

BROOKSHIRE GROCERY NAMES MASSEY NEW CEO

TYLER, Texas -- Brookshire Grocery Co. here said last week it has named Marvin S. Massey Jr. chief executive officer, a position that had not been part of the company's organizational structure for the past four years. He most recently was executive vice president, chief financial officer and secretary. Massey also will serve as chairman of the company's executive committee. As CEO, he will oversee Brookshire's 160 stores under Brookshire's, Super 1 Foods, Ole Foods and ALPS banners, as well as distribution, administration and manufacturing operations. "We will continue to focus and fine tune our efforts on the legendary customer service for which we are famous," Massey said in a prepared statement. He has held various financial positions with the company over the past 21 years. The company also promoted Tim King to senior vice president, chief financial officer and controller to assume Massey's previous responsibilities.

BI-LO/BRUNO'S TAP CARNEY TO BE EVP, CFO

MAULDIN, S.C. -- Bi-Lo/Bruno's here said last week that Brian P. Carney has been appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective in mid-October. Carney, 45, currently serves the same roles for Jo-Ann Stores, Hudson, Ohio, a leading fabric and craft retailer. Previously, Carney served as CFO and senior vice president for Revco Drug Stores. At Bi-Lo, Carney replaces Steven Ortega, who resigned earlier this year. He will report to Dean Cohagan, Bi-Lo's president and chief executive officer.

ROBINSON NAMED COO AT HARVEYS SUPERMARKETS

NASHVILLE, Ga. -- Harveys Supermarkets here last week said Tom Robinson has assumed full responsibility for day-to-day operations at the chain as vice president and chief operating officer. He succeeds Benny Ensley, who has retired. Robinson, a former vice president of retail operations at Food Lion, Harveys' sister chain under Delhaize America, Salisbury, N.C., had joined Harveys earlier this year for a transitional period.

INGLES REAL ESTATE EXECUTIVE TO RETIRE THIS WEEK

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Gordon S. Myers, vice president of real estate for Ingles Markets here, will retire effective Sept. 24, the company said. Myers has served at Ingles since 1993. "He has been an asset to our company and his services will be missed," Robert P. Ingle, chief executive officer, said in a statement. The company did not say whether a successor to Myers would be named.
