Bill Shaner, formerly executive vice president and chief operating officer, succeeds Moran as president and CEO, Save-A-Lot, and has also been named senior vice president, Supervalu. No one has been named to succeed Shaner as executive vice president and COO. Moran opened the first Save-A-Lot in Cahokia, Ill., in 1977, and it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu in 1992.
Giant Taps Glei for New Grocery Strategy Post
CARLISLE, Pa. - Giant Food Stores here has named Dan Glei to the newly created position of vice president, grocery strategy. In his new role, Glei is responsible for value engineering as it relates to Giant's suppliers, identifying process improvements in the way Giant conducts business, and developing strategic long-term opportunities for the company. He reports to Jeff Martin, senior vice president, non-perishables. Glei most recently served as state chain director with Glazers Companies of Louisiana.
Kroger Promotes Heldman to EVP, Counsel
CINCINNATI - Kroger here has promoted Paul W. Heldman to executive vice president, secretary and general counsel. Heldman previously served as senior vice president, secretary and general counsel. He joined Kroger in 1972 as a staff attorney and was named senior vice president in 1997.
Byars to be Minyard CEO; Johnson Still Chairman
COPPELL, Texas - Michael D. Byars has been named chief executive officer of Minyard Food Stores here, replacing Ron Johnson, who will stay on as chairman, the retailer said. Johnson joined Minyard shortly after a Texas investment group acquired the chain in 2004. Byars, who like Johnson is a former executive at Kash n' Karry in Florida, was hired by Minyard in January of 2005. In a release, Minyard said Johnson would focus on "broad strategic opportunities" for the company. Minyard also announced the promotion of Pat Liska to executive vice president of business development. Liska was formerly EVP of merchandising and marketing.
