ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Birds Eye Foods here is recalling 12-ounce cartons of its branded Frozen Cooked Winter Squash, as well as company-branded versions of the product, because it may have been tainted with ammonia. Stop & Shop, Shaw‘s, Price Chopper, Hannaford, Market Basket, Wegmans, Giant, Tops, Safeway, IGA, Roundy‘s and Dominick‘s merchandise the frozen squash under their own private labels. The Cooked Winter Squash was produced by a third party, Chase Farms, Walkerville, Mich., which has ceased production and distribution for Birds Eye Foods while it continues to investigate the problem. Presence of the colorless gas may cause headache, nausea, vomiting and irritation of the throat. Wegmans distributed an email about the recall to subscribers of its Fresh News email newsletter yesterday that said, “because this is Thanksgiving week and this may be a product that would be served in many homes, we wanted you to be aware of the problem.”
