MATTHEWS, N.C. — Harris Teeter is reminding Virginia residents that Wednesday kicks off a week during which they can buy hurricane emergency supplies tax-free. Virginia’s “Hurricane Emergency Preparedness Tax Holiday” runs through May 31.
“We’ll be stocked up on all the essential gear for your kit,” Harris Teeter writes on its Facebook page, where it also includes a link to www.readyvirginia.gov, which provides more information on the event.
In response to tornadoes that hit Virginia in April, the state instituted a tax-free week for citizens to buy what they need to prepare for possible tropical systems. Participating items include batteries, flashlights, bottled water and first aid kits priced $60 and below, and generators for $1,000. Such items will be exempt from the 5% state and local sales tax.
Virginia also has two additional sales tax holidays: one for school supplies and clothing in August, and one for Energy Star and WaterSense products in October.
