Margaritas and flowers on the to-do list for Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo
Nearly two-thirds of Millennial Kroger shoppers tell 84.51° they plan to celebrate the Mexican holiday
Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo are right around the corner, and this year’s big winners are likely to be flowers and tequila, respectively, according to a new report from Kroger’s data analytics team 84.51°.
Forty-two percent of Kroger customers surveyed for the report named flowers as the top item they plan to buy for their moms at the grocery store this year. That’s followed by cards at 35%, gift cards at 19%, candy at 18%, self-care items at 11%, and perfume at 7%.
A little over a third (34%) of respondents said they do not plan to make a purchase for Mother’s Day.
Meanwhile, 32% plan to make a meal at home for the day, and 22% plan to dine at a restaurant. Another 17% plan to eat at a family member’s or friend’s house, while 11% are inviting family and friends over.
Cinco de Mayo is less than a week later, and nearly two-thirds (62%) of Millennials are planning to celebrate. That’s followed by Gen Xers at 46% and Baby Boomers at 35%.
Nearly one in five (19%) survey respondents plan to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a margarita this year. The holiday commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, but has largely become a celebration of Mexican culture in the U.S.
Another 15% of respondents plan to celebrate by cooking a traditional Mexican dish at home, 13% plan to dine at a Mexican restaurant, and 9% plan to order Mexican takeout.
