The National Grocers Association (NGA) opened its 2014 show with a record-setting attendance level of over 3,000 attendees, alongside a sold-out expanded EXPO floor, which includes a wide variety of pavilions in the produce, meat, technology, and general merchandise and health, wellness and beauty product sectors.    "The independent grocery channel is a vital force, accounting for nearly one percent of the nation's gross domestic product," commented NGA President and CEO Peter J. Larkin. "Independent grocers continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of their customers, and the NGA Show was created as the place where independents gather to discuss innovative ideas they can then implement in their own stores. This year's strong turnout of independent grocers and wholesalers, and those who support this industry, speaks to the value attendees see in the NGA Show."    Prior to the Show's opening session, NGA hosted first-time pre-convention workshops on new meat merchandising ideas and tips on boosting produce sales. In addition to the pre-convention workshops, the Show will highlight seven workshop tracks, with over 100 speakers, including sessions on:

  • Incorporating social media into marketing strategies

  • Developing shopper loyalty programs

  • Home delivery and curbside pickup

  • Learning the benefits of locally produced perishables

  • Tracking consumer buying habits and shopping trends

The keynote for the opening session featured famed Washington journalist and best-selling author Bob Woodward.
