MONTVALE, N.J. -- An environmentally oriented frog and turtle logo, long used in Europe by A&P's parent company, Tengelmann Group, Mulheim, Germany, is making its way to these shores. A&P here recently started internal use of the logo at its stores in this area, and in the Delaware Valley. Moreover, SN has learned that A&P plans to build an "environmentally friendly" supermarket in this region.

that encourages children to take used plastic shopping bags to school. The bags are then bought from the schools by makers of the trash bags, with revenue going to the benefit of schools. That program is in use in the Delaware Valley.

Christian Haub, A&P's president and chief operating officer, told SN that the symbol also will be used to keynote an environmentally related promotion that A&P plans to roll out for Earth Day 1995.

He also said A&P is making plans for an environmental store: "actually building a new supermarket, which will make use of environmentally friendly concepts connected with construction materials, lighting, reduced-energy usage, and so on. "We could open that store in 1995 or later. We haven't finished our plans yet." The store is planned for northern New Jersey. Further details were unavailable.
