A huge assortment of new, improved and traditional mainstay candy, salty and savory snacks will be on display at this month’s Sweets & Snacks Expo.

hersheys logo in a gray background | hersheysMay the Force be with retailers as they explore this year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo.

Not only because more than 650 manufacturers of confections, salty snacks, cookies, meat snacks, fruit snacks, ice cream and other treats will be filling the halls of Chicago’s McCormick Place convention center May 19-21, showcasing and sampling their newest, best and legacy products. But because there will be a definite “dark side” in the air as Jelly Belly introduces its new packaged line of jelly beans based on the Star Wars franchise.

“We will have Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper at our booth available for photo ops,” says Tomi Holt, director of communications, Jelly Belly Candy Co., based in Fairfield, Calif. “We will also have a large Jelly Belly portrait made of Darth Vader and the artist Kristin Cuming will be there signing autographs.”

While a visit to Jelly Belly’s booth will take one back to a galaxy far, far away, a stop by the Hershey’s booth will more likely be something out of Futurama, with the Hershey 3-D chocolate printer on display.

“Hershey’s 3-D chocolate printer is the most advanced 3-D chocolate printer in the world,” says Michele Buck, president North America for The Hershey Co., based in Hershey, Pa. “Developed in partnership with 3D Systems, a leading 3-D printing company, the printer offers nearly endless possibilities for custom, 3-D chocolate. In just one year, Hershey has evolved the technology very quickly based on consumer feedback. The show will feature Hershey’s sixth generation printer. It can print a variety of custom shapes, including faces, animals, buildings and logos in intricate designs simply not possible with traditional molding.”

Here is just a sampling of what else the estimated 16,000 visitors will find on the show floor of this year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, sponsored by the National Confectioners Association:
