NORTHLAKE, Ill. -- Dominick's Finer Foods ran a half-price sale on Hoover vacuums and electric brooms last month.

"We've done promotions similar to this with Reebok footwear. It's similar to the way some chains have glassware and Corningware," said a Dominick's spokesman.

To qualify for the discounted prices a shopper had to make $20 to $25 in purchases. Dominick's promoted the appliances in ads that also featured vacuum replacement bags and carpet mats.
