Two VPs Named at Handy Andy

lazar, former president of Handy Andy Supermarkets here, has been named vice president of administration at Handy Andy under its new ownership.

Megafoods Stores, Mesa, Ariz., acquired the 21-store Handy Andy chain in February. Salazar's position is a new one under Megafoods' ownership. The position of president has been eliminated at Handy Andy.

Tom Remy, who was chief director of operations for Handy Andy, has been named vice president of operations. This is a new position.

Salazar and Remy both report to Dean Miller, chairman and chief executive officer of Megafoods.

Dan Dexter, who ran Megafoods' local discount operation -- Texans' Warehouse Foods, which was renamed Texans' Foods -- has resigned.

Megafoods operates 36 stores here, including 15 former Kroger units that were acquired last fall and the 21 Handy Andy stores. All 36 stores will carry the Handy Andy banner and be operated as conventional stores by mid-May.

Supervalu Division Taps Marketing VP

XENIA, Ohio -- The Ohio Valley division of Supervalu has named Gary Gionnette vice president of marketing, a new position.

Gionnette, who had been director of marketing for the Ohio Valley division here since last year, will continue to be responsible for coordinating all sales, merchandising and procurement functions for the division. He reports to Joel Raffenbeul, president of the Ohio Valley division. Gionnette previously worked at Supervalu's JM Jones division in Champaign, Ill., and held the positions of produce product manager, corporate director of produce and director of merchandising. Before joining JM Jones, Gionnette held a variety of positions at Safeway, Oakland, Calif.

Supervalu, based in Minneapolis, is the nation's largest food wholesaler and a major food retailer.

FMI Names Urban Affairs Manager

WASHINGTON -- Jackson Lee Davis 4th has been named manager of urban affairs and diversity programs, a new position, at the Food Marketing Institute here.

Davis will work with FMI's Urban Initiatives Committee and the Task Force on Managing Diversity. He is expected to play an active role with such outside groups as the National Urban League and the National League of Cities.

Davis was an analyst in FMI's education department. He reports to Karen Brown, vice president of communications.

Additionally, FMI named Sherrie L. Rosenblatt manager of media relations, a new post. Rosenblatt, who was a media relations specialist, is responsible for news conferences, news monitoring and conference promotion, among other duties. She reports to Edie Meleski, director of media relations.
