Wakefern Appoints Sheriden Senior VP

Corp. here has named Joseph Sheriden senior vice president of marketing.

The position had been eliminated, but was re-established with Sheriden's appointment to coordinate merchandising, procurement and warehousing activities, the company said. A Wakefern spokeswoman declined to say when or why the post had been eliminated.

Sheriden, whose previous title was vice president of the general merchandise division, will continue to overee that division and continue to report to Dean Janeway, executive vice president.

Sheriden has been with Wakefern since 1976. Wakefern is a retailer-owned cooperative here and the wholesale merchandising and distribution arm for ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware.

Shulman Re-elected at Foodtown

EDISON, N.J. -- Hy Shulman, chief executive officer of West Essex Foodtown, Caldwell, N.J., has been re-elected to his 10th one-year term as chairman of the board of Foodtown Supermarkets here.

Martin Vitale, CEO of Vitale Enterprises, Old Tappan, N.J., was re-elected to his fourth one-year term as president.

New officers elected to one-year terms are Ronald Ginsberg, CEO, Food King, Union, N.J., vice president of the board; Stanley Kaufelt, chairman and CEO, Mayfair Super Markets, Elizabeth, N.J., treasurer; William Davidson, CEO, Davidson Bros., East Brunswick, N.J., secretary, and Ronald Dickerson, CEO, E. Dickerson & Son, Mount Tabor, N.J., assistant secretary. Others board members are Joseph Azzolina, president and general manager, Food Circus Supermarkets, Middletown, N.J.; Calvin Bell, CEO, Bell Beef Co., Matawan, N.J.; David Maniaci, president and CEO, Nicholas Markets, Haledon, N.J.; William Michas, CEO, Manyfoods, Whippany, N.J.; Gerard Norkus, CEO, Norkus Enterprises, Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.; Mel Weitz, CEO, Melmarkets, Garden City, N.Y., and Michael Zimmerman, CEO, Sidney Charles Markets, Long Branch, N.J.

Foodtown Supermarkets operates 150 stores in New York and New Jersey.

D&W Adds Workers' Comp Post

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- D&W Food Centers here has named Floyd Wilson Jr. worker's compensation coordinator, a new position.

Wilson was safety and training supervisor for LePrino Foods in Allendale, Mich.

In his new post, Wilson is responsible for worker's compensation at each D&W location, and for developing safety policies and measures to reduce workers' compensation claims.

He reports to the vice president of human resources, a position which is being filled, according to a D&W spokesman.

D&W operates 25 units in Michigan.

California Growers Names Sharp VP

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Gene Sharp has been named corporate executive vice president, a new position, with California Growers Corp., a private-label marketing company based here.

He also was named to the company's board and reports to C.A. Perrucci, chairman and chief executive officer.

Sharp was president and chief executive officer of Affiliated Food Stores, Keller, Texas, which liquidated in 1993 after filing for Chapter 11. Earlier in his career he worked for Red Owl Food Stores and Supervalu, both in Minneapolis, and Hinky Dinky Supermarkets, Omaha, Neb.
