Sainsbury Names 3 to Giant Board
y, the United Kingdom's largest food retailer, has named three directors to the board of Giant Food here following the completion of its purchase of voting and nonvoting shares of stock from the Lehrman family. The three new directors are:
David J. Sainsbury, chairman and chief executive officer of J. Sainsbury.
Dino Adriano, chairman and managing director of Homebase, Sainsbury's chain of home improvement and garden centers and deputy chairman of Shaw's Supermarkets, East Bridgewater, Mass.
Harry G. Beckner, an industry consultant who was president of Jewel Cos., Melrose Park, Ill., from 1967 to 1978 and chief operating officer of H.E. Butt Co., San Antonio, from 1978 to 1984.
J. Sainsbury's stock purchase, valued at about $325 million, was completed late last month. The Lehrman family, which sold the stock, are relatives of the late Samuel Lehrman, who co-founded Giant in 1936.
The other four seats on the board, and the remaining 50% of the voting stock, are controlled by Israel Cohen, Giant's chairman and CEO, whose father, Nehemiah Cohen, co-founded the company with Lehrman.
In relinquishing the three seats, the Lehrmans ended nearly 60 years of family involvement in the company.
