Safeway Restructures Management

here has named David G. Weed manager of its 252-store northern California division, based in Fremont, Calif.

Weed succeeds John A. Cartales, senior vice president and division manager, who has retired from Safeway after a 49-year career.

Weed had been senior vice president and manager of Safeway's 72-store Phoenix division since joining the company in March 1993. He was formerly an independent consultant to the chain for several years.

Succeeding Weed as senior vice president and manager of the Phoenix division will be Bruce Everette, formerly vice president and retail operations manager for the division. No successor has been named to that post.

Both Weed and Everette will report to Stephen Burd, president and chief executive officer.

Moving with Weed from Phoenix to northern California is Wayne Foxworthy, vice president of marketing operations, who will assume the same position in the northern California division. That position had been vacant.

Foxworthy will report to Weed. No successor to Foxworthy has been named in Phoenix.

Camellia Fills Five Executive Posts

NORFOLK, Va. -- Camellia Food Stores here has completed a series of executive changes in the wake of its recent restructuring to its core 45-store retail operation.

As reported, the company sold its wholesale division earlier this year to Richfood Holdings, Richmond, Va., and agreed to make Richfood its primary supplier.

David Scully has been named director of store operations and merchandising, while Joseph Cannestra and Carl McKinney have been named regional directors. All are new positions.

Cannestra, McKinney and Scully have each been with the company about two years and previously were district managers. Cannestra and McKinney report to Scully, while Scully reports to Guy Sykes, president and chief executive officer.

Linda Sullivan, formerly a programmer, was also appointed to the new position of senior programming analyst. She has been with the company three years.

Stephen Rosa has joined Camellia as director of human resources, succeeding Russ Chandler, who left the company.

Rosa previously held human resources-and operations-related positions with Wal-Mart, Bentonville, Ark., and Victory Markets, Utica, N.Y.

Sullivan and Rosa report to Sykes.

Minyard Taps LaForte As New VP, Treasurer

COPPELL, Texas -- Minyard Food Stores here has named Mario LaForte vice president of finance and treasurer, a new position.

LaForte has been with the company for 10 years, most recently as director of finance and treasurer. He reports to J.L. Williams, president.

Minyard operates 81 stores throughout Texas under the Minyard, Sack'N Save and Carnival banners.

Carr Gottstein VP Gets New Post

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Carr Gottstein Foods Co. here said Gary Schloss, vice president of general merchandise, has been appointed vice president of grocery and general merchandise, a new position.

He will assume some of the responsibilities formerly handled by Gregory M. Carr, who resigned as senior vice president of sales and marketing, effective Aug. 24.

Schloss will report to Larry Hayward, chief operating officer, who will take a more active role in the areas of perishables and marketing.

Carr is resigning to return to Gregory Associates, his marketing consulting firm here. However, he will continue to work with the 38-store company and act as a consultant in the areas of marketing and promotions while directly supervising Alaska Advertising, a Carr Gottstein subsidiary.
