Winn-Dixie Appoints Vice Presidents

e Stores last week elevated two executives to vice president status. Joel B. Barton was named vice president, responsible for the 141 stores in the Charlotte division. Barton will report to John Sheehan, senior vice president of operations.

Stephen T. deRiesthal was named vice president, real estate, a new position. DeRiesthal will be responsible for acquiring and managing Winn-Dixie properties and will report to Dennis Sheehan, senior vice president of real estate.

Barton joined Winn-Dixie on Sept. 27 as Charlotte division manager. He previously worked for Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich., as executive vice president, merchandising-marketing, and president of retail stores.

DeRiesthal, joined Winn-Dixie in January 2001 as regional director of real estate. He previously was with Blockbuster where he was Southern-area real estate manager.

The company also named John E. Anderson, president and CEO of Patriot Transportation Holding, Jacksonville, Fla., to its board of directors.

Fleming Names Thatcher to Head IGA

DALLAS -- Fleming Cos. here has named Jim Thatcher president of Fleming IGA. In his new position, Fletcher will be responsible for supervising Fleming's supply of more than 600 IGA stores. He reports to Mark Hansen, Fleming's chairman and chief executive officer. Previously, Thatcher was president of Fleming's Southern retail operations.

GroceryWorks Picks Lauffer VP Operations

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway announced that Dave Lauffer has joined GroceryWorks as vice president of operations. Groceryworks is the provider of online grocery shopping for Safeway and its operating companies. It is 50% owned by Safeway and 35% owned by Tesco.

Lauffer will be responsible for in-store and delivery operations for the grocery shopping and delivery service that operates under the Safeway.com and Vons.com brands. Previously, Lauffer was senior retail operations manager in Southern California for Vons, a Safeway company.
