FORMER SAFEWAY EXECUTIVE HEADS DOLLAR GENERAL

AFFILIATED FOODS' CEO FROEHLICH TO RETIRE

NORFOLK, Neb. -- Virgil Froehlich, chief executive officer of Affiliated Foods Midwest, a retailer-owned food cooperative here, announced he will retire on Jan. 1, 2004. Froehlich has served 27 years as Affiliated's senior executive. Martin Arter is president of the cooperative that represents more than 800 stores in 10 states.

Froehlich said in a report that "Affiliated needs to complete the transition to a new leadership team, and build on its strengths for its long-term future. I will clear the way for President Martin Arter's continuing growth."
