LOS ANGELES -- Gelson's Markets, a subsidiary of Arden Group here, anticipates extending its geographic reach northward to Santa Barbara in the next few years, Bernard Briskin, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in the parent company's annual report.

Santa Barbara is located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles and approximately 60 miles north of the chain's northernmost store in Calabasis, which opened last January. The annual report did not indicate when the proposed site was likely to open. Arden operates nine Gelson's and three Mayfair Markets in southern California.

The report also disclosed the death of Curtis H. Palmer on April 5 at the age of 88. Palmer, who was the company's chairman for 17 years and a board member of Arden and its predecessor company for 21 years, retired in June 1995 with the title chairman emeritus.
