SEATTLE (FNS) -- Larry's Markets has entered into an agreement with a local nursery and greenhouse operator in a joint effort to operate lawn and garden shops at select Larry's units.

The retailer has installed the shops at two Larry's Markets locations dubbed Molbak's Outposts. The presentation includes bedding plants and flowers during the spring and summer gardening months, and, come winter, plans call for a selection of Christmas trees.

"We joined retail forces because we wanted a garden center and figured we should have the people who know how to do it," said floral specialist Courtney Young. He said that the nursery, Molbak's, will merchandise their products as well as order, stock and maintain the department; and provide signage. Larry's will water the stock and sell the items.

"It is a good fit because we cater to the same customer base," said Steve Leigh, vice president of stores and merchandising, Molbak's, Woodenville, Wash. "We are often called the Nordstrom of nursery, and I think of Larry's as the Nordstrom of grocery. We both offer unique products, are family-owned and have similar goals."

As the planting and growing season hits full swing, many retailers take advantage of the opportunity gardening presents. One potential stumbling block, however, lies in providing the expertise customers demand and offering quality plants that bolster the store's image.

"Molbak's is known for their outstanding plants and great directions for care. The racking is at waist level and the plants are spaced out for better breathing room," Young added. "We are excited about this. It is a fun idea that will positively impact both companies, bring more traffic to the store and give our customers the convenience of a closer Molbak's to visit."

In the near future, Larry's plans to carry tools, gloves, shovels, clogs and other gardening-related items year-round, Young added.
