LILLIE IS ELECTED TO VONS BOARD

ARCADIA, Calif. -- John M. Lillie, a former chairman and chief executive officer of Lucky Stores, has been elected to the board of directors of Vons Cos. here.

Del Santo, who was named vice chairman and chief executive officer of Vons earlier this year. Del Santo had been with Lucky's parent, American Stores Co., Salt Lake City, at the time he joined Vons.

"We are most fortunate to have John join our board," Del Santo said in a statement. On the Vons' board, Lillie fills a position vacant since July, when Betsy Sanders left to become a director of Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark.

Lillie, 57, is chairman, president and chief executive officer of American President Cos., Oakland, which provides container transportation services. He also serves on the boards of The Gap and the Bay Area Council.

Vons operates 345 supermarkets in southern California.
