Lowes Foods' has begun its annual food drive, Friends Feeding Friends, which runs through December 31, 2011. Lowes Foods will be collecting food donations in all of their stores across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. These donations will be delivered to local food banks in the areas in which they are collected.

Since 1995, Lowes Foods has collected over 16 million pounds of food. The goal this year is to raise over 600,000 pounds of food, equal to around 504,000 meals for those in need.

The local food banks struggle to keep up with the demanding needs of the hungry in our communities. Lowes Foods is one of the largest contributors to these organizations helping feed those in need through multiple food drives each year. When this year's goal is attained, Lowes Foods will have provided over 6,000 families of four three nutritious meals a day for seven days.

"Part of our responsibility as a family-owned Carolinas-based company is to help our less fortunate friends and neighbors. We are proud to be in our seventeenth year and we hope to fill all the empty pantries we can." says Lowes Foods President, Steve Hall.

Friends Feeding Friends is the largest food drive in North Carolina, and this will be the seventeenth year Lowes Foods stores have collected donations. Customers may purchase pre-made bags of non-perishable items most needed in the food banks in any Lowes Foods or Just $ave Foods store. Donation bins are located at the front of each store for quick and easy drop off. Customers may also choose to donate cash at the register in increments of $1.00, $3.00 and $5.00 amounts.

Businesses, local schools and civic groups are also involved in the donation efforts, raising awareness of the growing problem of hunger across the country. Local schools that partner with Lowes Foods' donation efforts have the opportunity to earn Campbell's Labels for Education for their school.

Other donations will be given by Constellation Wines and Miller/ Coors. Sunrise Broadcasting also plans to participate with their seventh annual 24-hour food drive at the South College Road location in Wilmington on November 19, and WGNI will be giving away the chance to win two Disney trips to local donators in Wilmington on November 12 and 19.
