Athenos Makes Feta Reclosable

Co. here has changed the package of its Athenos brand feta cheese to a reclosable, plastic package.

According to Chris Faust, account executive, the packaging was changed to add convenience in storing the cheese for reuse. The new package is made out of PETE 1, the same plastic used to make two-liter soda bottles.

Faust said the company is beginning the national rollout of the repackaged product this month.

Although its packaging has changed, the company is not changing the price of feta. The 4-ounce package of crumbled feta will retail at $1.59, and the 8-ounce block of feta will retail at $2.59.

Borden Takes Out All the Fat

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Borden here has expanded its dairy line with a fat-free milk to be marketed under the Lite Line and Viva brand names, which have separate distribution areas.

"This is in response to the consumers' concerns," said Steve Michaelson, director of marketing. "Consumers will now have a choice between whole, low-fat, skim and fat-free nonfat milk."

Another Borden official said the company uses the term "fat-free nonfat milk" because, according to government regulations, nonfat milk can have up to one gram of fat. Borden's fat-free nonfat milks have no grams of fat.

The milk is packaged in gallon, half-gallon, quart, pint and half-pint containers.

Land O'Lakes Offers Plus 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Land O'Lakes here has introduced Plus 3 low-fat milk and Plus 3 orange juice, which contain Vitamin E and two digestive enzymes.

The two enzymes, acidophilus and bifidus, aid in digestion and help rid the intestines of harmful bacteria or prevent the bacteria from forming. The enzymes may also improve lactose tolerance and may aid in the absorption of calcium.

Theresa Trocke, marketing manager of Country Lake Foods, a division of Land O'Lakes, said the enzymes and the addition of Vitamin E were "among the main reasons we created the Plus 3 line." She added that the company wanted to give the consumer more choices.

The Plus 3 juice products are available in select markets in the Midwest, including Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Wisconsin. The Plus 3 milks are available in Chicago. Trocke said the company rolled these products out in April, but had no plans for any further rollouts across the country.

The milk is available as 2% low-fat milk and fat-free skim milk. A half-gallon of the low-fat milk has a retail price range of $1.59 to $1.69, while the orange juice has a retail range of $1.79 to $1.89 per half-gallon.
