PORT SHUTDOWN COSTS FOOD COMPANIES BIG
WASHINGTON -- West Coast dockworkers returned to work last week, ending the 11-day shutdown of 29 U.S. ports, but food companies said the port closures cost them millions of dollars. Dole Food Co., Westlake Village, Calif., said that containers of fresh California vegetables sitting at the port of Oakland, Calif., may never reach overseas customers. The company said it had estimated losses of $2.4 million due to spoilage, increased shipping and transportation costs, and lost sales.
