Frank Wells, 62

f. -- Funeral services were pending here last week for Frank G. Wells, president and chief operating officer of Walt Disney Co.

Wells, 62, died Easter Sunday in a helicopter crash near Elko, Nev., where he was on vacation.

In one of his last public speaking appearances, Wells addressed the March 8 session of the National-American Wholesale Grocers' Association convention at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel. Wells, who had been president of Disney for nearly 10 years, spoke at the NAWGA meeting about quality control as practiced by Disney.

Disney has been one of the dominant studios in home video rentals and one of the most important to supermarkets because of its major family-oriented sell-through titles.

Wells is survived by his wife, Luanne, and sons, Kevin and Briant.

Frank Petrini, 93

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Services have been held here for Frank Petrini, a supermarket pioneer and founder of Petrini Markets, San Rafael, Calif.

Petrini, who had been ill with pneumonia for several weeks, died March 31. He was 93.

Petrini, who was born in Italy, began his San Francisco grocery career in 1922 as a butcher. He opened his first meat market in 1935 and had four stores in operation by 1949.

The business eventually grew to 18 stores. Petrini sold the operations to Provigo, Montreal, in 1988. Provigo was later renamed Univa and continues to own the Petrini Markets through its U.S. subsidiary, Provigo Corp.

Petrini is survived by his wife, Marie; a daughter, Carolyn Hoffman; a brother, Divo, and 10 grandchildren.
