WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores here plans to open seven stores in New York City within the next several years, including a controversial site in the East Harlem section of Manhattan.
The proposed East Harlem store -- a 53,000-square-foot structure with parking for 125 cars -- would probably open in late 1996 if the project is approved, said Stan Sorkin, the chain's vice president of public affairs.
The site was approved by the Manhattan borough board in late April, but New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani must give the final OK. He is expected to announce his decision on June 16, according to Sorkin.
Some residents and local politicians oppose the proposed store, claiming it would hurt the area's small businesses.
Pathmark operates 17 supermarkets in New York City. Sorkin said that "over the next couple of years, there could be six additional [Pathmark] sites in New York City, one of which is in Manhattan, in addition to this one [in East Harlem]."
