SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- Production at a Safeway milk-distribution plant here resumed last Tuesday, 24 hours after an industrial accident in which a maintenance engineer was killed when a piece of warehouse machinery fell on him.

the incident occurred last Monday morning.

Production was halted immediately "to ensure employee safeway," a spokeswoman for the Pleasanton, Calif.-based chain, told SN. However, shipments that were already loaded for delivery went out on schedule, she noted.

The California Occupational Safeway and Health Administration inspected the equipment that afternoon and cleared the plant to resume production on schedule the following morning, she said.

The warehouse processes and packages milk for all Safeway stores in northern California.
