CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- At its business meeting next month, the Frozen Food Council of North Carolina here will institute a scholarship in the name of William K. McKenney, treasurer of the FFCNC and a broker with Acosta Sales, who died Sept. 26.
The scholarship will benefit college students with financial need and strong moral character and who are studying in North Carolina toward a career in the food industry. A presentation will be made Dec. 10 to McKenney's widow, Jean, and children, Michael, Allison and Matthew.
"Those of us who worked and served with Bill have been blessed and privileged," said Joe D'Alberto, president of the FFCNC and a co-worker at Acosta. The Harris Teeter chain here has already committed itself to a financial donation, he added.
At the recent National Frozen Food Convention in Boston, an announcement was made from the podium regarding McKenney's death, which had occurred just days before.
Born in Bangor, Maine, McKenney graduated from the University of Maine and worked for General Foods for 15 years. In 1989, he joined D.F. Cameron Co. as a partner and vice president of the perishables department. McKenney worked in this capacity through D.F. Cameron's mergers with Alliance and Acosta Sales. He worked for Acosta as corporate-brand development manager for Kellogg Sales Co.
McKenney spent his career in the food industry, beginning as a stock clerk for Hannaford Bros. in Maine during his school years, according to Acosta.
The family has requested memorials be sent to the American Heart Association, 1229 Greenwood Cliff, Suite 109, Charlotte, N.C. To contribute to the scholarship, send donations to: Frozen Food Council of North Carolina, P.O. Box 11901, Park Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28209.
