Flat sales kept most chains and wholesalers running in place on SN's annual listing of the top 75 supermarket companies.

enth, while Vons Cos., despite flat sales, switched places with Univa to move from 15th to the 14th spot.

H-E-B Grocery Co., which is doing a hefty business with its Food Pantry conventional stores, surpassed Pathmark Stores and Oshawa Group to move from 18th to 16th on the list, and Bruno's moved past four chains with basically flat sales (Ralphs Grocery Co., Grand Union, Penn Traffic and Food 4 Less) and past Fred Meyer Inc., to move from No. 27 to No. 23.

Purity Supermarkets -- under new ownership and fighting to establish a new image in New England -- suffered the biggest drop among retail chains, falling from No. 54 to No. 69.

Among wholesalers, the pending acquisition by Supervalu of Sweet Life Foods, which is expected to be completed early this year, will not alter the rankings but will widen Supervalu's volume lead over Fleming Cos.

Nash Finch Co., adding new accounts in military supply, jumped over Roundy's and Spartan Stores. Certified Grocers of California, operating in the economic trough of southern California, fell from 33rd to 38th on the list. And Super Food Services, with the shutdown of its Florida division, fell from No. 44 to No. 55.

Last year's No. 75, AppleTree Markets, dropped off the list completely with its ongoing liquidation.
