(A) Groceries at Wal-Mart Supercenters accounted for approximately 30% of total sales, or approximately $17.1 billion. Supercenter sales represented approximately 30% of total corporate sales, which are estimated at $190.7 billion for 2000.

(B) Kroger sales include approximately $160 million from 16 Baker's Supermarkets, Omaha, Neb., that Kroger agreed to acquire in late December.

(C) Gary E. Michael has disclosed he will retire as chairman and CEO after Albertson's annual meeting in June.

(D) Safeway sales stated on a pro forma basis to include approximately $900 million in sales from 39 stores Safeway has agreed to acquire during the first quarter from Genuardi's Family Markets, Norristown, Pa. Store total also includes 11 Abco Desert Markets in Arizona being acquired from Fleming, Dallas.

(E) Ahold USA sales include approximately $4 billion from six months' operation of U.S. Foodservice. Ahold USA sales accounted for 55% of the parent company's 2000 sales of approximately $49.8 billion (U.S.).

(F) Corporate stores at Supervalu accounted for 40.2% of total sales. The distributor also licenses 711 Save-A-Lot limited assortment stores.

(G) Corporate stores at Fleming accounted for 21% of sales.

(H) Winn-Dixie pro forma sales for the four quarters ended in December 2000, including $625 million in volume from 68 Jitney Jungle stores the chain has agreed to acquire.

(I) Loblaw sales also includes volume from 425 franchised stores.

(J) A&P operates 750 corporate stores and 70 franchised units.

(K) H.E.B. sales include volume from 10 stores in Mexico.

(L) Sobeys Canada sales encompass 133 supermarkets, 221 convenience stores and 65 drug stores, plus 952 franchised stores. Approximately 20% of Sobeys' sales come from food-service operations.

(M) C&S supplies products to a variety of Top 75 retailers, including A&P, Ahold USA, Big Y, Pathmark, Safeway, Shaw's and Wal-Mart, and volume from those sales is reflected in the sales totals for C&S and for each of the individual retailers. C&S plans to operate an undetermined number of corporate stores that were acquired from Grand Union; however, the exact number has not yet been determined.

(N) Food sales at Super Kmart (encompassing groceries, consumables and restaurant) accounted for approximately 36% of sales. Super Kmart sales represented approximately 13% of Kmart Corp.'s total sales, which are estimated at $37 billion for 2000.

(O) Sales total includes volume from 18 former Grand Union stores Shaw's was acquiring at the end of calendar 2000.

(P) Giant Eagle operates 140 corporate stores and 64 franchised stores.

(Q) Corporate stores at Nash Finch accounted for 26% of total sales.

(R) Hy-Vee operates 185 supermarkets and 28 drug stores.

(S) Corporate stores at Spartan accounted for 36% of sales.

(T) Corporate stores at Associated Wholesale Grocers accounted for less than 1% of sales.

(U) Corporate stores at Unified Western Grocers accounted for 6% of total sales.

(V) Corporate stores at Roundy's accounted for 33% of sales.

(W) Corporate stores at Metro accounted for 33% of total sales.

(X) Marsh Supermarkets operates 104 supermarkets and 184 convenience stores.

(Y) Price Chopper totals include nine former Grand Union stores acquired in late December from C&S Wholesale Grocers, three of which will be replacement stores for existing locations.

(Z) Store total includes 20 former Jitney Jungle Stores acquired a month before the end of the fiscal year.

(a) Smart & Final sales include approximately 22% from food-service operations.

(b) Sales at Alex Lee Inc. include $742 million from Lowes Food Stores, Winston-Salem, N.C.; $1.2 billion from Merchants Distributors Inc., Hickory, N.C., a wholesaler (approximately 38% of whose sales go to Lowes); and $259 million from Institution Food House, Hickory, a food-service distributor.

(c) Brookshire store total includes four former Jitney Jungle stores in Louisiana the company agreed to acquire at the end of December.

(d) Corporate stores at Associated Food Stores accounted for 25% of total sales.

(e) Minyard sales include volume from 13 gas stations.

(f) Corporate stores at AWI accounted for 6% of total sales.

(g) Super Target sales represent approximately 2% of Target Corp.'s total sales, which are estimated at approximately $36 billion for 2000.

(h) Corporate stores at Bozzuto's accounted for 5% of total sales.

(i) Corporate stores at Copps accounted for 85% of total sales.

(j) Pueblo sales encompass 50 supermarkets (44 in Puerto Rico and six in the U.S. Virgin Islands) and 44 Blockbuster video stores.

Additional Notes

IGA, the Chicago-based network of independent operators, accounted for 2000 sales of approximately $19.2 billion at 4,000 stores worldwide, including $9.5 billion from 1,715 stores in the United States; $3.5 billion (U.S.) from approximately 500 stores in Canada; and $6.2 billion from 1,785 stores overseas. Virtually all of the volume in the United States and Canada is included in the sales numbers of IGA's 11 wholesaler-owners in the United States and two in Canada.

Piggly Wiggly Co., Memphis, Tenn., is an umbrella organization for 620 franchised stores in 18 states with a combined 2000 volume of approximately $3.2 billion. Fleming, Dallas, is the parent company and is also one of several wholesalers that supplies products to the Piggly Wiggly stores.
