QUINCY, Mass., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Stop & Shop today announced it received the 2010 Sidney Farber Medical Research Award, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's highest accolade, for its 20-year partnership, that has raised more than $50 million for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, through Stop & Shop's annual Triple Winner Game.
The Triple Winner Game was started in 1991, and has supported the long-term efforts in building the world-renowned Stop & Shop Family Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic at Dana-Farber. The clinic is the most comprehensive research and care center for pediatric brain tumor patients in the United States. In 2009, the Stop & Shop Family Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic saw more than 100 patients for treatment of newly diagnosed diseases.
The award was presented on Oct. 6 by Dr. Lawrence N. Shulman, chief medical officer and senior vice president for Medical Affairs, for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Mark McGowan, president for Stop & Shop/New England accepted on behalf of the supermarket company.
"Stop & Shop is tremendously honored to partner with Dana-Farber to help contribute to the team of researchers and caretakers who work tirelessly to develop new treatments that combat cancer," said Mark McGowan. "We know that cancer is a disease that touches so many people. We designed the Triple Winner Game as a simple way for our shoppers and associates to get involved and give back."
"Stop & Shop is our longest-standing corporate partner, and the Triple Winner Game has had a tremendous impact on advancing the research, treatments and care for our young patients over the past two decades," said Dr. Lawrence Shulman. "We can't express in words our tremendous appreciation for Stop & Shop for the company's outstanding commitment in the fight against cancer."
The Triple Winner Game allows shoppers to make a $1 contribution to the Jimmy Fund each time they shop, and in return, shoppers receive a Triple Winner scratch ticket to receive free store products, coupons, gift cards or cash prizes up to $10,000. In 2010, Stop & Shop's Triple Winner Game raised $3.75 million.
In addition to supporting the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Stop & Shop also supports Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Johns Hopkins hospitals. Beyond combating childhood cancer, Stop & Shop has also been involved with supporting all communities in the areas of hunger and educational and support programs for children.
These programs have helped thousands of people and are supported through the Stop & Shop Family Foundation, which has donated $150 million to local hunger organizations on behalf of Stop & Shop customers and vendors since it was formed; and as of 2010, has already raised and donated more than $5 million to support the communities Stop & Shop serves.
