ST. LOUIS — A group of value retail veterans led by former Save-A-Lot Chief Executive Officer Bill Shaner have founded a new discount business with wholesale, retail and e-commerce components.
STL Global Sales, based here, will operate retail stores and an Internet sales business under the Here Today banner, selling deeply discounted consumables and general merchandise. The company will also sell merchandise across multiple categories to independent retailers and small wholesalers. The wholesale side will also provide a unique solution for manufacturers for end-of-lifecycle products, including overstocks, expiring or retiring product lots, discontinued items, closeouts and seconds.
The company in a release said it was run by a “dream team” of discount veterans including Shaner; Tom Holley, former president and CEO of Grandpa’s Stores and the founder and president of Deals: Nothing Over a Dollar; and former Deals, Grandpa’s and Save-A-Lot veterans Larry Tyler, Rick Meyer and Jeff Schneider.
The company said it planned to open its first four stores under the Here Today banner in the St. Louis area later this year, but noted sites have not been chosen yet. The stores, expected to be 15,000 to 20,000 square feet, would offer an assortment of deeply discounted merchandise across numerous categories including grocery, refrigerated and frozen food; housewares; electronics and small appliances; storage solutions; health and beauty; home décor; seasonal; gifts; and candy.
“We believe that we can deliver exceptional values at a time when consumers place tremendous importance on saving both time and money,” Holley said in a statement. “We’re taking the best parts of some of the other value-centric retail formats out there, blending in on-trend merchandise, pricing it to knock people’s socks off, and bundling it all in a store that is truly inspiring. In doing so, we believe we will transform the category of off-price retail.”
