WGA Hosts First-Ever 5K Fun Run/Walk

LAS VEGAS — The first-ever 5K Fun Run/Walk kicked off at 6 a.m. Monday during the 30th annual convention of the National Grocers Association, with 115 people participating in the fund-raising event.

The first-ever 5K Fun Run/Walk kicked off at 6 a.m. Monday during the 30th annual convention of the National Grocers Association, with 115 people participating in the fund-raising event.

The 3.1-mile run was sponsored by the Women Grocers of America to raise money for the Mary Macey Scholarship Fund, which provides educational and professional opportunities for individuals in the food industry. 

Although it was a non-competitive event, the winner in the male category was Ted Balistreri, president of Sendik's Food Markets, Milwaukee, with a time of 24:24; winner in the female category was Lindsey Higgins, an assistant professor of agribusiness at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, who came in at 28:43.
