DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has opened the online enrollment period for its new customer loyalty program called Balanced Rewards.

The program is unique given its use of a mobile card that allows members to scan their mobile device at the register to earn points and savings and redeem rewards without carrying a plastic card.

Members earn reward points on everyday purchases and other activities. Filling a prescription, for instance, is worth 500 points and members of Walk with Walgreens earn 10 points per mile logged. Every 5,000 points is worth $5 in savings.

Participants can review purchases and points activity and obtain special member savings through the Walgreens app. They can also select photos from Facebook albums to print and pick up at any Walgreens in about an hour.

Customers who join online before the official Sept. 16 launch will have a chance to enter the Walgreens 10 Million Point Giveaway sweepstakes. Members can earn additional entries by referring friends to the program. Ten grand prize winners will be randomly selected from the entry pool to receive 1 million points, valued at $1,000 in savings.
