JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — While Winn-Dixie Stores here may not use in-store robotics to dispense prescriptions, the chain is employing web-based scheduling systems to improve workflow and customer service in its 374 in-store pharmacies.

For example, Winn-Dixie, which recently announced the availability of flu vaccinations at all of its pharmacies, this year implemented an online scheduler allowing customers to make an appointment for a flu shot at the store of their choice — and receive a reminder of the appointment. Pharmacists can block out times when staff is too busy to administer shots.

“Customers are assured that the pharmacist will give them the attention they need for the flu shot,” said John Fegan, vice president of pharmacy for Winn-Dixie. “And it allows pharmacists to make sure they have enough help in the store.”

Winn-Dixie also offers the Ready Refill Program, a web-based automated system that enables shoppers to schedule refills and receive phone reminders that the medicine is ready for pick-up; the chain will launch iPhone reminders by mid-September, said Fegan. The pharmacy, in turn, is better able to plan workflow and inventory to meet customer demand.
