A TREND TO BANK ON

Banks are opening branches in supermarkets at a rapid clip. More than 400 were opened last year, and 500 more are expected to open by the end of 1994. The relatively small branch offices are successful, retailers say, because loan officers are moving into the aisles and "using the entire store as a branch."
