NEW YORK — Duane Reade here is launching an in-store clinic model with the potential to quiet criticism over the growing popularity of these retail health care centers. In partnership with Consumer Health Services, Washington, Duane Reade has opened three DR Walk-in Medical Care sites within its Manhattan stores, with a fourth expected to open this year. The clinics provide patients with the option to see an on-site physician on a walk-in basis, differing from most nurse practitioner-run in-store clinics. The state medical associations of Illinois and Texas have cautioned against the traditionally nurse-run clinics being under-regulated and not requiring a doctor to be a part of the full-time staff.
