SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper here has started offering a pocket guide for users of its NuVal Nutritional Scoring System that provides average scores for 50 product categories from bagels to yogurt.
The NuVal system, a joint venture of Topco Associates and Griffin Hospital, Derby, Conn., ranks products from 1 to 100 on shelf price labels — the higher the score, the better the overall nutrition.
By listing scores for popular categories and foods, Price Chopper’s pocket guide aims to help shoppers "compare items within those categories," the chain said on its Facebook page. The average scores for fresh beef, cookies and fresh fruit are 30, 7 and 95, respectively, according to the guide.
Price Chopper, which rates 17,000 products with the NuVal system, has also introduced new shelf labels with larger and easier-to-read NuVal scores.
The Price Chopper pocket guide is available here.
NuVal is offered at 1,030 U.S. supermarkets, including Hy-Vee, Meijer and Big Y in addition to Price Chopper.
