OF THE VARIOUS GROUPS OF CONSUMERS shopping in supermarkets today, none seem as idealistic about the connection between food and health as young people. This year, WH asked 20-somethings about their shopping habits, and how their favorite retailers influence the choices they make. Whether they're students or part of the workforce, it's no surprise that their responses were full of references to wellness, the environment and animal welfare.
What values and principles do you bring to the supermarket when you shop, and how do they influence the purchases that you make?
“I try not to get sucked in by advertising, especially when it comes to trans fats. But I still buy foods that I grew up loving (Cheerios, Cheetos, tacos, pizza), and not much will change that, even if they aren't considered “good” for me! I also enjoy a great deal (coupons, etc.) due to the fact that I have been a student for so long and price is still a key factor for my family.”

Where you do the majority of your grocery shopping: FESTIVAL FOODS
“I am a student in college on a pretty thin budget. The thing that puts [my favorite supermarket] over the top is their attention to their customers. The store is always well-lit and clean, and it is open 24 hours a day so that I can do my shopping on my time.”

“I look for three key elements: the freshness of the produce, the liveliness of my shopping community, and the aura of the market. I enjoy vibrant, fresh colors lining the aisles, because the design and quality of the store usually reflects the quality of the food you're purchasing. I also enjoy a large variety of organic products, especially those that help promote local farmers.”

“I really appreciate the fact that the store I shop at offers a lot of local products. When given the choice to support people and products that promote safe and healthy commercial practices, I will definitely support them. It's just a simple and positive thing I can do.”

Where you do the majority of your grocery shopping: HY-VEE
“The quality of produce and meats is my foremost concern, but the freshness of dairy products is important to me as well. For all else, I look for items with the least amount of artificial flavors and colors, no trans fats (or very little) and a shorter list of ingredients.”
