BRUSSELS -- Delhaize here said last week its sales rose 6.3% to $6.8 billion for the 26-week half ended June 30. In that period, the company -- owner of Food Lion, Salisbury, N.C., and Super Discount Markets, Lithia Springs, Ga. -- added 152 stores to give it a total of 2,056 units in 10 countries.

Delhaize said it will continue to expand in the second half, adding 67 stores, not including the proposed 152-unit Hannaford Bros. acquisition.

The first-half's highlights included:

Delvita, Delhaize's subsidiary in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, acquired 50 Interkontakt stores.

Delhaize acquired all outstanding stock of Bel-Thai, the company's Thai subsidiary, and then sold 51% of its share to its American subsidiary, Food Lion. The chain will be renamed Food Lion Thailand.

It acquired 49% of Shop N Save, Singapore's third-largest retailer.
