Safeway Names Eastern Manager

He succeeds Bill McDown, who retired Feb. 25 as senior vice president and manager of the 127-store division. McDown, 60, joined Safeway, based in Oakland, Calif., in 1952 and progressed through the company's retail ranks before becoming head of the Eastern division in 1991.
Donald, 39, has been vice president in charge of Wal-Mart's Supercenter format since joining the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer in 1991. He had previously spent 15 years with Albertson's, Boise, Idaho, ending up as vice president overseeing the chain's Phoenix division.
Donald reports to Steven A. Burd, president and chief executive officer of Safeway, the nation's third-largest chain.
Supervalu Appoints Fader Int'l Director
MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here has named John Fader general director, international, a new position at the company.
Fader will be responsible for identifying foreign retail opportunities for possible joint ventures or acquisitions, Supervalu said. He also will be responsible for Supervalu International, the trading subsidiary of Supervalu.
Fader most recently was managing director and chief executive officer of Dairy Farm Espana, a Spanish retail subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Dairy Farm International. He held that position with the retail holding company from 1990 through 1992.
Fader also has been a managing director and a director with Dairy Farm International, joint managing director of Burfitt Selth & Co., a wholesale company based in Adelaide, Australia, and a manager for Woolworths of Australia.
At Supervalu, Fader reports to Jeff Noddle, executive vice president of marketing at Supervalu, a food wholesaler and retailer with operations in 47 states.
Roundy's Elects Two Officers
PEWAUKEE, Wis. -- Michael J. Schmitt and David C. Busch have been elected corporate officers of Roundy's here.
Both executives previously had been named corporate vice presidents. The formal election by the board of directors, however, allows them to be listed as officers of the corporation under Securities and Exchange Commission rules.
Schmitt was elected corporate vice president of the Northern region, the same title he held as an appointed officer.
Busch, formerly corporate vice president of human resources, was elected to the new position of corporate vice president of administration. He will continue to be responsible for human resources while adding administrative duties.
Schmitt and Busch continue to report to Jerry Lestina, Roundy's president and chief operating officer.
United Grocers Names Chairman
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Marlin Smythe, owner of Lincoln Beach Sentry Supermarket, Lincoln City, Ore., has been elected chairman of the board of United Grocers, a wholesale cooperative here.
Craig Danielson, owner of Thriftway stores in Milwaukie, Newberg, Oregon City and Gladstone, Ore., and one Shop N' Save in Oregon City, was elected vice chairman.
Three new members were elected to the board: Pete O'Neal, owner of Flavel Food-Valu and Laurelhurst Food-Valu here; Art Thenell, owner of Pioneer Sentry in Sisters, Ore., and David Neal, owner of Sunset Thriftway in Tillamook, Ore.
United Grocers, a retailer-owned cooperative, supplies 363 independents in Oregon, Washington and northern California.
At the company's annual meeting here, Alan Jones, president, said 41 new member stores had joined the wholesaler last year and four new stores were built. The company expects a combination of 25 new stores and store expansions this year, Jones said.
