A&P Appoints Executive VP
MONTVALE, N.J. -- A&P here said J. Wayne Harris senior vice president of U.S. operations, has been appointed executive vice president of U.S. operations -- a new position.
Harris joined A&P in 1992 from Kroger Co., Cincinnati, where he was president of the company's Cincinnati/Dayton, Ohio, marketing area. He continues to report to Christian Haub, president and chief operating officer.
A&P also named Veronica Hackett to the newly created position of senior vice president of real estate.
Hackett joined A&P from Watson Equities, New York, where she was a specialist in the real estate industry and a managing partner until 1992. She also reports to Haub.
Supervalu Names Four Directors
MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here has named four executives to newly created director positions.
Tom Algeri was named director of advertising production for Supervalu's retail services group. Algeri has been with the company since 1982. He reports to Bob Spelts, director of advertising and sales promotion.
Marsha Ostrow was named director of wholesale foods planning and analysis. She has been with the company since 1978. She reports to Greg Heying, senior vice president of distribution.
Mike Overline was named general director of recruiting and human resources. Overline joined the company in 1980. He reports to Ron Tortelli, senior vice president of human resources.
Robert Shebeck was named general director of compensation and benefits. Shebeck joined Supervalu in 1981. He, too, reports to Tortelli.
Norton Joins Eagle as Senior VP
MILAN, Ill. -- Eagle Food Centers here has named David Norton senior vice president of retailing. Norton succeeds Kenneth L. Martin, who will retire from Eagle for a second time. He had initially retired in May 1991 but returned in June 1994 to help the 95-store company with its turnaround. Norton was formerly senior vice president of procurement at Alpha Beta Co., La Habra, Calif. In his new position, he will report to Robert E. Kelly, chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Certified Names 2 Senior Managers
LOS ANGELES -- Certified Grocers of California here has named two new members to its senior management team. Donald W. Hawks has been named vice president of marketing and procurement, a new position, although he inherits most of the marketing responsibilities formerly held by Jerry Friedler, who was vice president of marketing before he left Certified last September to join Richfood, Mechanicsville, Va. Hawks, who left Certified as a private-label buyer in 1984, was formerly vice president of procurement and marketing at Super Store Industries, Lathrop, Calif.
George D. "Ted" Gardner has been named general manager of Grocers Specialty Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Certified. Gardner was formerly vice president and general manager of Ingro Mexican Foods, Carson, Calif. He succeeds Rick Kester, who has left the company. Both Hawks and Gardner will report to Al Plamann, Certified's president and chief executive officer.
