Ahold USA Executive VP Retiring
SA here said Nicholas S. Riso will retire Dec. 31 as executive vice president of retail operations. Riso, who has held that post since 1989, has been with Netherlands-based Ahold since 1982, when Ahold acquired Giant Food Stores, Carlisle, Pa. Riso's responsibilities encompass operations and human resources. He said the human resources duties will be taken over by Gary Preston, who was named executive vice president of human resources for Ahold USA. Preston has been executive vice president of human resources for Bi-Lo, an Ahold subsidiary based in Mauldin, S.C. He will report to Rob Zwartendijk, president and chief executive officer of Ahold USA. Preston's appointment will become effective as soon as a successor at Bi-Lo is found, the company said. Riso said Ahold will not name a successor to his operations responsibilities "for a while because the company is in the midst of several major initiatives involving information technology." Riso joined Giant Food as executive vice president and chief operating officer and a minority owner in 1972; he was subsequently named president in 1979 and added the title of chief executive officer when Ahold acquired the company three years later. Earlier in his career he was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Hills Supermarkets, Brentwood, on Long Island, N.Y., from 1970 to 1972 and spent the previous five years with Allied Supermarkets, Detroit, ultimately serving as vice president and general manager for its Eastern division.
Baker's Appoints Marketing VP
OMAHA, Neb. -- Baker's Supermarkets here has named Stephen Zubrod vice president of marketing, a new position. He is responsible for developing and implementing marketing plans and overseeing advertising and promotions.
He most recently served as category manager of brand services for CMS, Winston-Salem, N.C., a coupon redemption agent. He was responsible for analyzing the effectiveness and efficiency of a client's consumer promotions. He has also been employed by Dial Corp. and Hallmark Cards.
Zubrod reports to the office of the president, which includes Jack Baker, president and chief executive officer, and Mike Petersen, executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Baker's operates 18 supermarkets and warehouse stores in Nebraska.
VanCamps Names Controller
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- VanCamps Supermarkets here has named Corey Davis corporate controller, a new position.
Davis most recently was senior accountant for Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich. He reports to Roger Camp, president and chief executive officer of vanCamps.
Tesco Sets Changes for Board
LONDON -- U.K. supermarket group Tesco plc will make a series of changes to its board after key figures retire in the next two years.
The company said Deputy Managing Director Terry Leahy will become chief executive on the retirement of David Malpas as managing director in early 1997. In addition, Sir Ian MacLaurin will retire as chairman in June 1997 and be succeeded on a part-time basis by John Gardiner, one of the group's deputy chairmen and currently chairman of Laird Group plc.
Tesco said David Reid will continue as finance and distribution director. Reid will also become a deputy chairman of the group, succeeding Victor Benjamin, who retires in June 1996.
