Mike Wright To Retire From Supervalu

id last week Mike Wright, chairman, director and former president and chief executive officer, will step down from his positions at the company's May 30 annual meeting. Jeff Noddle, president and CEO, will succeed Wright on that date. Prior to joining Supervalu in 1977, Wright practiced law here for 13 years. In 1978, he was named Supervalu president and chief operating officer, becoming CEO the following year. In 1982, he was named chairman. Wright was also a former chairman of both the Food Marketing Institute and Food Distributors International.

The company also said last week it has promoted John Hooley to corporate executive vice president, and president and chief operating officer of Supervalu's retail food companies, effective immediately. Prior to his promotion, Hooley was corporate senior vice president of retail, and CEO and president of Cub Foods. Hooley assumes responsibility for eight of Supervalu's nine retail banners including Cub Foods, Shop 'n Save, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Metro, bigg's, Farm Fresh, Scott's and Hornbacher's. Hooley will continue to report directly to Noddle.

Supervalu also said it has promoted Sherry Smith to corporate senior vice president, finance, and treasurer. Prior to her promotion, Smith was corporate vice president and controller. Her new position will include responsibilities for debt financing, cash management, internal and external reporting, budgeting and analysis, and due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, in addition to her previous responsibilities in treasury and accounting.

Also, the company said it has named John Breedlove to general counsel and corporate secretary. In his new position, Breedlove is responsible for many of the legal aspects of Supervalu's merger and acquisition activities and the company's securities compliance and treasury financings. Prior to joining the company, Breedlove was an attorney with the law offices of Dorsey & Whitney, Minneapolis, and Graham & James, San Francisco.

Food Lion Promotes McCoy, VP Distribution

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion here promoted Dennis McCoy to vice president of distribution. In his new position, he will oversee all of the company's distribution and transportation functions. He will also serve as a member of Food Lion's leadership team responsible for the company's supply chain. Most recently, McCoy served as director of distribution, with responsibility for Food Lion's six distribution centers.

Craig Schnuck Named To U.S. Bancorp Board

ST. LOUIS -- U.S. Bancorp here said last week Craig Schnuck, chairman and CEO of Schnuck Markets, St. Louis, has been named to the company's board, bringing the number of members of the board to 21. Previously, Schnuck was a director of Firstar Corp. prior to its merger with U.S. Bancorp in 2001 and a director of the former Mercantile Bancorporation prior to its merger with Firstar Corp. in 1999.
